The Door of Hope dolls were made in Shanghai, China at the Door of Hope Mission. The mission was created to help women and girls who had been sold into servitude or prostitution. Making these dolls taught the women sewing skills which they could then use to support themselves. The dolls were sold to help support the mission which lasted from 1901 until approximately World War II.These dolls have historical value because they provide a record of the clothing worn at the time across a br...oad spectrum of Chinese society. Door of Hope woman in silk with beautiful beaded headband. Note that one side of the headband has lost some beads. Doll is in very good condition. As shown in the photos clothing is unfaded and remarkably clean for a doll of this age. Carved arms and head are in very good condition. An example of this doll is shown on page 96 of "Dolls With a Mission" by Jean M. Kestel. Kept in glass case, non-smoking home. Please see the pictures for further details.
