Original Description:
I'm a hard core Sansui enthusiast and collector. I've had a mad passion for Sansui stereo equipment since the mid 1970's. And as a paying member of the best audio group in the world (Audiokarma) for the past 12 years, I've learned plenty of useful info about vintage stereo equipment. To date I have owned well over 200 pieces of Sansui equipment and thirty of them were 9090's. It is with this knowledge and experience I will do my best to give an accurate and detailed descripti...on of this incredible Sansui receiver.
I purchased this boxed Sansui 9090DB from the original owner. The serial # shows it was manufactured in March 1978, in what could be the final stages of production for this model. The owner stated he only used it for a short while, and that is evident. When I unpacked it I was totally blown away by the incredible condition. While inspecting it I reached a level of excitement that is not easily explained. This is a piece that was put away while in like-new condition. There are minute cosmetic imperfections resulting from minimal use, but overall the machine is in stunning condition. Of the slight blemishes, I would say the worst are some small scuffs on the wood trim piece below the faceplate. The scuffs do not penetrate the wood (see photos).

Exterior The faceplate is in beautiful condition. The dial glass (plastic) is one of the cleanest I have ever seen, extremely shiny and transparent. Behind the dial glass you can see the inner plastic dial with radio frequencies (FM-MHZ) being equally clean and brilliant. The dial glass is so transparent you can see how shiny and new the black paint looks on the inner metal frame (across the row of push button switches). The wood case is in gorgeous condition, with extremely sharp corners. The factory stickers look new. The knobs are similarly beautiful. The rear panel is extremely clean. The antenna, ball, and mount are absolutely gleaming. The ball assembly looks as if it was molded yesterday. The heatsink caught my eye immediately. The fins are dust and dirt free. The Toshiba final transistors are extremely glossy and clean. The red lettering is bright and complete. The RCA connectors look perfect. Speaker terminals are bright and have great spring tension. This unit has a multiple voltage selector plug. The power cord prongs looks like they were only plugged in a few times. The plug end and cord looks almost unused. Even the white strip and lettering on the cord is bright white. The plastic feet show only the slightest amount of wear from being moved around. These units are over 50 lbs and the feet generally take a beating when moved. What looks like like a scratch across the bottom of the foot (see pic) is actually a seam in the mold. All 4 feet have the same exact marking.
Interior After looking inside my initial thoughts were confirmed. This was one of the newest-looking 9090's I had ever seen. I could only find the slightest hint of dust anywhere, including the inside of the bottom cover. The inner portion of the rear panel shows only the slightest amount of dust. All the large ceramic resistors are super white including the ones on the tuner power supply. Usually they discolor from all the heat they produce and can potentially un-solder themselves. The plastic illumination box that holds the fuse style lamps is extremely white. The plastic nearest the fuse lamps is just starting to show the slightest amount of yellowing from the heat of the lamps (see photos). All the small selector bulbs and grommets look brand new (see photos). The illumination box mounting screw location shows a crack in the plastic. This may be due to over-tightening at the factory, since this machine was never serviced. Alternatively, it may have cracked due to the plastic becoming brittle over the years. The driver board is immaculate, even the fusible resistors appear much shinier than what I am accustomed to seeing.
Why I believe this is a like new low hours unitAfter inspecting this unit, I believe the original owner's claim that it was packed away while in very new condition. Overall everything has a like new bright shine. It is super clean inside and out. There was almost no dust in areas where it usually builds up from being plugged in and used. No dirt or grime anywhere. No signs of wear in the usual places. Generally when a piece of equipment is used, it shows in ways that cannot be cleaned. You can't hide the evidence of components getting hot and causing discoloration or burning. You also can't hide what that heat does to nearby components. The tuner section shows the true like-new condition of this unit. The large ceramic resistors are a bright white. The tuner power supply board shows no evidence of heating or burning. After opening hundreds of pieces of vintage stereo equipment you get familiar with how they look in different stages of use. I have had tons of Sansui equipment in like-new condition, but the vast majority showed more evidence of use. That is not the case here. I hope the pictures and video help show just how special this Sansui receiver is.
Work performed and testing
I used a veriac and dim bulb tester simultaneously over the course of multiple days. slow small steps. I cleaned all switches and controls with Deoxit. Inspected all boards for bad solder joints. I lightly flowed some new solder in the tuner power supply where the large ceramic resistors heat up and desolder themselves. Same with the prongs that hold in the fuse style lamps. They looked good, but I figured why not address a few known troubled areas as long as I was in there. When I reached full power and turned it on, it came out of protection quickly and tuned in radio stations great. Aux and phono section also sound great. This receiver sounds incredible and has tons of clean power. The only surface cleaning done was on the top of the main transformer. The unit will ship in the same condition I received it in. You can witness my findings. No further work or adjustments have been made in the 10 days I have owned it.
During the point of testing I was having second thoughts about keeping this unit. Don't get me wrong, this is truly a dream machine. But for me it's way too nice to sit here unused. I would rather let someone else enjoy it while it's in this like-new condition. This machine deserves to be someone's main piece. Seven years ago I realized I was hoarding Sansui solid state equipment to the point of not even being able to use or enjoy it. I spent way more lime looking for gear than enjoying it. As I was getting into Sansui tube equipment I decided to thin the heard of the solid state. Since then I have switched to efficient horn loaded speakers, so this receiver is way more than I need. Today I have a manageable Sansui tube gear collection that I use regularly and enjoy immensely.
The unit will be double boxed and insured. This receiver is being sold as is with no warranty. The pictures and video show it's a working unit. The original owner told me he misplaced the paperwork and manuals. He said when he finds he will call. I will gladly send whatever he finds. Bidders with a feedback score of under 20, please contact me before bidding. I will only ship to USA address
