The obverse depicts Gen. George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette in profile, heads left, with their names inscribed in the legend. The name of the artist, Gaston Lavrillier, is also inscribed. Lavrillier (1885-1987) was a prominent French painter, engraver ...and medallist.
On the medal's reverse are inscribed the significant dates 4 July 1776 and 14 July 1789, those of the American Declaration of Independence and the storming of the Bastille prison at Paris, respectively. Below are inscribed the words JOURNEE DE PARIS, "Day of Paris", the date 1917, and the letter-mark A.
The medal recalls the assistance given by France to the United States in its war for independence from Britain and the French revolutionary struggle to create a representative republic. In spirit it recalls the words of Charles Egbert Stanton at Lafayette's tomb in Paris, 4 July 1917: "Lafayette, we are here!"
