This auction is for a vintage 1950’s Shinagawa Kyoto Hanga-Inshin-hanga wood block print in the original bamboo frame. Fromartist Gihachiro Okuyama (1907 – 1981), the scene reflects the great Buddha ofKamakura.Measurements: 15 ¼” x 18 ¾”Artist GIHACHIRO OKUYAMA (1907 – 1981) - Gihachiro Okuyama wasborn in the city of Sagae, Yamagata, in the Tohoku region of Japan.He began as a commercial artist, creating advertising art for many differentcompanies and establishing his own a...dvertising company in 1931. He createdsuccessful commercial art for both the Japan Wool Company and Nikka Whiskey. Okuyama studied printmaking with Gajin Kosaka beginning in 1923, as well as with noted artist Kendo Ishii, and began exhibiting prints with theNihon Sosaku Hanga Association in 1927. DuringWorld War 2, he was a member of the Nihon Hanga Hokokai, an organizationcreated to ensure access to production materials for hanga artists during thewar.
