Item History & Price
Note: This is a 3-day auction.FREE shipping is only offered for sales within the United States.
This auction is for one of the earliest of the Lenci creations, a miniature Pierrot clown that is only 16 inches tall.Nancy Lazenby's 1977 book "Lenci Dolls" shows a photo on page 11 of an advertisement in the the 1920 Playthings toy catalogue for the Leipz...ig Toy Fair which indicates that Pierrot was described as model 116.His sad face is delicately painted, right down to the dot eyebrows, side-glancing blue eyes and tiny pursed mouth with two-tone lips. He has small single-layer felt ears next to which are painted unusual long russet-colored "spit curls."He has a movable head, hard-stuffed torso, mitten hands and fully posable limbs. He is dressed in an all-felt two-piece dark green clown suit consisting of a thigh-long jacket with a large ruffled black felt collar and flared pants. The only accents are large felt-covered buttons down the front of the jacket and on the cuffs of both the sleeves and pants legs.He wears a black felt skull cap and black felt boots which are actually part of the feet.Affixed to the hem on the left side of his jacket is a tiny 1/8" metal button incised with the word "Lenci." This button was only found on Lenci dolls from 1921 through 1923.Condition: Little Pierrot is in remarkable condition for being almost 100 years old! There is very little fading and no moth damage, just overall shelf dust.He is missing his little mandolin, which could easily be replaced with a vintage toy instrument or reproduced. Here is a chance to add to your Lenci collection one of the earliest designs that began the long and successful history of the Lenci company. Please see my other auctions this week for more rare Lenci dolls, original Lenci boxes, and other interesting items.Good luck and happy bidding!
