1860s DUG GROUP OF 4 MISSISSIPPI RIVER BUTTON CLAM SHELLS FOR MAKING BUTTONS

Here's a group of 4 authentic Mississippi River mussel or clam button shells over 140 years old which have had buttons drilled from them. We dug them from an 1860s site near the Mississippi River.....you get all 4 shells for one price...The largest shell is 4"long and has had 8 circular button blanks drilled from it .... 2 button holes in the smallest shell, which is only 1 7/8"across. They are all in good condition. You can still see some of the rainbow sheen mother of pearl effect on... surface. ....Button making was an early important industry along parts of the upper Mississippi River in Illinois. These shells were harvested from the river and drilled to obtain circular blanks from which buttons were made. It was a labor intensive process to make buttons in those days! First, the shells had to harvested from the river...then cleaned. Button "blanks" were drilled carefully from each shell with the use of a tiny circular saw. These blanks were then drilled with tiny holes for the thread and polished and finished. The finished mother of pearl buttons were then sewn by hand on a piece of paper to prepare them for the market. YOU ARE GETTING ALL 4 SHELLS SHOWN........
