Vintage Restored 1930s Art Deco MONTBLANC Meisterstück No. L139 Fountain Pen
Item History & Price
ca. 1937-1942
History Made in Germany in the 1930s/40s. This is the largest, top-of-the-line oversized model in the 13x line-up (similar to the modern 149 in the 144, 146 and 149 line-up). Transparent, striped barrel with long ink-view window and celluloid cap and cap top, with inset white snowflake made of casein (g...alalith). Celluloid barrel, filling system housing may be ebonite but I can'e be sure. Waterfall clip and triple cap band, with gold filled centre ring and two sterling silver bands to the sides. This oversized model was the most expensive in its time and these pens are not very commonly seen.Overall, a very uncommon and sought after model, the telescopic piston is a fantastic example of German engineering (the pen takes a full barrel of ink every time)
Item condition:
Generally VG- vintage condition with the following points to note: beautiful, glossy surface with nice imprints and crisp imprints and milling to the piston housing.
Gold filled trim has a tiny bit of wear; the pen has some minor marks consistent with age and the fact that it was used in the past. Imprints to the cap ring in very good condition, as pictured. Telescopic piston system works as it should, and has been fitted with new cork seal. The wartime steel nib (correct for this model) is in good condition, Montblanc used really high quality alloy for their nibs. All in all, this is a very sought after early Montblanc pen in nice condition.Overall, a very nice and presentable pen; this Montblanc has been re-listed as the buyer indicated that the piston seal needed to be re-lubricated (the pen has not been used for a long time so it was a bit tight) and the nib needed to be tuned.Filling system
It is a piston filler, with new cork seal fitted.
To fill, unscrew the barrel end and keep turning counter-clockwise to extend the piston as far as it goes, until it stops. Immerse nib and edge of the section in ink. Turn clockwise to retract the piston and draw ink into the pen. Wipe pen point with a soft tissue and the pen's ready to use. Filling system has been re-corked and the pen's ready to fill and write. The pen has been in storage so the cork seal has been re-lubricated recently.

Nib:
Original stainless steel Montblanc 250 nib – Bold (B) point, semi flex. The pen was either made in the wartime period (early 1940s) or the gold nib was replaced during the war when all gold was needed for the war effort and was really scarce. Then nib was likely bi-colour when the pen was new but the gold mask must have worn off with use. Still, the nib is in great visual condition. Tipping is present and the pen writes as it should, but the nib makes a little bit of a 'rustling' sound on poor quality paper - however, it's a smooth writer but perhaps not for people who prefer extremely 'quiet' nibs.
