Chester A. Arthur ? - President Arthur as the windblown little DOG caught in an unexpected storm? "Copyrighted 1882 by E.B. Duval." - political cartoon parody of Arthur being sucked reluctantly into Presidency ?
"Vennor ... Today: Fair, Dry & Warm." (Vennor's familiar portrait appears on title page of his Almanacs)
NOTE: I've never seen this card explained, but another card from this... same Duval set of 6 cards depicts: Charles J. Guiteau (1841 - 1882) who shot President James A. Garfield on July 2, 1881.
After Pres. Garfield's shooting, the stunned Vice President Chester Arthur was reluctant to assume the role.It makes sense that cartoonist E.B. Duval would produce a companion Arthur parody to his Guiteau image.
Vennor's Almanac and Weather Record. (Very popular publication during the 1870's and 1880's)
Henry George Vennor (1840 - 1884) a Canadian naturalist and meteorologist who became
famous for his accurate autumn 1876 weather prediction for Toronto of a "green" Christmas and
a rainy New-Year's day and began publishing the Vennor's Almanac. (from Ben Crane's site)
