Original Description:
Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Bentley - 1835. This little sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, and border patterns with two birds at the end of the second set of letters and finishing with Sarah's name, the date of 1835 and the numbers 1 through to 5. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a meandering strawberry border with a central blue dog benea...th who has a bird to his left and a fruit tree to his right. There is a charming three storey red house beneath the bird with a tree and a man with his dog to its left and a fruit basket and tree to its right. There is a bird above the roof of the house which has a bell flower motif to his left and a flower, carnation basket and angel mask to his right.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a few small stains on the top right side edge. The colours of the wool are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it.Measures 9" x 11 1/2"
