EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY SUTCLIFFE - 182

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Mary Sutcliffe aged 14 - 182*. The last digit of the date appears to have been unpicked, probably by Mary herself so as not to reveal her true age in later years. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has a flower basket to each side and Mary's details and the date of 182* beneath with the initials ABS to their right

The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey red house with an annexe built on the right side. The house has a rose basket to each side with a bird and a large letter B above the basket on the left and a parrot, floral motif, carnation and small letter P above the basket on the right. There is a row of three flower baskets beneath the house with a floral motif and small dog to their left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn which has a bird and further floral urn to each side of its topmost blooms and a floral motif to the left and right of its side blooms. The urn itself has a small floral motif, open tailed peacock, bird and tall floral motif to its left and a small floral motif and fruit basket to its right. with the letters P and F to the side of the peacock and fruit basket. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There are general patches of staining, moreso in the bottom section of the linen, possibly caused by water damage. The colours of the wool are good with bleeding to areas of the stitch work and the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage to the upper right side edge of the linen and a few small areas to the field. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. There are also small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto the stretcher. PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 17 1/4" x 21 1/2"
