SYNOPSIS Our skin puts aworld of sensations in the palm of our hand, at thetip ofour nose, all over our bodies. Explore these skin sensations as In Touch with the World introduces our sense of touch. The sensations we experience through our skin help us to learn about the world and adapt to it. The skin has receptors for at least five different kinds of sensations: touch, pres...sure, hot, cold, and pain. Animation illustrates what happens when a pressure receptor in the skin is triggered, Fteoeptors for the other sensations work much as the pressure receptor does. Most of whatwefeel is a combination of these sensations. ln the film, students demonstrate that not all parts of our skin are equally sensitive to touch, pressure, pain, or temperature. The students map areas where temperature sensations are strongest and show that some places on our bodies have more touch receptors than others. Our sense oftouch is important in helping us develop a healthy personality and healthy rela- tionships. We all have skills right at our fingertips. Our sense of touch helps us make deci» sions, whether we realize it at the moment or nol. Our sense of touch also helps us avoid pain and adapt to our environment. But most important, our skin senses put us In Touch with the World.
