Item History and Pricing
Information:
Model: 728BBrand: Westen Electric
Modified Item: NoUPC: Does not apply
Original Description:
VINTAGE WESTERN ELECTRIC 728B FULL RANGE SPEAKER
NOTE: I am selling these speakers AS IS. I unfortunately cannot answer technical questions, as the elderly owner is no longer in a position to do any tests and provide me with answers.
When I picked up the speaker from the owner, he had it connected and playing music, so the speaker works fine. See below for SHIPPING AND INSURANCE INFO. THE SPEAKER WILL BE SOLD ONLY IN/WITH THE CABINET.
The speaker box is rustic, scr...atched, and unattractive. Photos are substandard, but I didn't want to remove the speaker from the box.
I am selling this speaker for an elderly gentleman who worked as an engineer for Bose Corp for more than 30 years. He built the speaker box per the speaker specifications and provided me with the detailed information below, which he wrote in 2017.
NOTE: The gentleman has one other 728B speaker that is in a separate listing, which is why the gentleman's text below refers to more than one loudspeaker. For the sake of simplicity, I am leaving the references to the plural "loudspeakers" in the text below, although this listing is for just one speaker.
BEGINNING OF GENTLEMAN'S INFO:The 728B loudspeakers are all in non-ported plywood cabinets built per the specifications of Western Electric (in terms of volume and stiffness) by myself around 1954 to 1960.  These have permanent magnets.  Please note all loudspeakers are max rated for very low power compared to products produced now in 2017.  Thus could very easily be burned out just connected to today’s amplifiers.Brand: Western Electric
Model: 728B Loud Speaker, 12 inch full range
Coverage Angle: 50 degrees
Voice Coil Impedance:  4 Ohms
Power Handling: 30 Watts Continuous
Approx. Frequency Range:  60 to 10,000 Hz. (cycles)
Speaker Enclosure Required:   3 cubic feet completely enclosed
Approx. Year Made:  1947, available from Graybar Electric Co.
“The 728B Loudspeaker represents an advanced application of the latest technique developed by the Bell Telephone Laboratories as a result of their never ending research and development in the interest of natural sound.”“The 728B is another in the famous series of Western Electric loudspeakers which give the feeling of presence – that characteristic which eliminates the consciousness that the program is coming through a loudspeaker.”“For optimum performance under average conditions the 728B enclosure should have a volume of three cubic feet, with no openings other than the baffle hole.  Since its dimensions are not critical the enclosure can be designed to fit into any type of installation – a highly desirable feature.”“The enclosure should be constructed of wood not less than ¾” thick.  (Less if wood reinforced.)  Inside surfaces of the box should be lined with sound absorbing material 1” thick.  If a grille cloth is used for covering the speaker it should be open mesh material which has not audible effect on the high frequency response.”Above four paragraphs from Western Electric specifications/ad document, not in sequence.  The gentleman's [name omitted] cabinets meet these specs.Reference:   “A History of Engineering and Science in the Bell System – The Early Years (1875 – 1925)”

SHIPPING AND INSURANCE:The speaker weighs 34 pounds. I am allocating 50 pounds for shipping to account for extensive padding and double boxing of the speaker. A charge of $50 for insurance will be added to the buyer's shipping cost.
Seller's note to self: this is speaker #2
