This is a pair of polished A grade iolite nuggets from India. Iolite is also known as Viking north stone, or the compass stone because of its pleochroism. Pleochroism the ability to absorb different wavelengths of light depending on its orientation. This is demonstrated beautifully in the stones shown here, as they appear as a rich sapphire blue from 2 angles, and change to a golden yellow to almost clear as the stones are rotated (see photos). Iolite is also so...metimes called water sapphire. These stones weigh 55 carats together, and have been in my personal collection for 16 years.
