Original Description:
This is a relist of an item which closed on 4/14. The history of the 2 month period is that original Buyer (who has a good and long buying history of my objects) had an unforeseen cash-flow problem due to extended out of Country travel and to relieve this Buyer any financial stress from me, as a courtesy I have chosen to relist the bracelet. It will be offered one of two ways: 1) as a BIN for the (original) winning bid; and 2) as a No Reserve Auction format with low opening bid. This i...s a friendly auction and is open to all Bidders. The original Buyer may do a BIN or may participate in the auction if the current funding situation clears. Good luck to all. Now the original Listing:
Up for auction is an early Haida Silver work fashioned into a bracelet with an as is (missing) hook clasp a piece possibly to have been crafted by Charles Edenshaw; I am not an expert but it's got that something that other bracelets just don't, follow? It is of tapered width: approximately measuring 1 1/2" at center front down to 1/2" at the terminals which share one-half of an eye element, either side of opening...when pressed together this becomes more evident, see Pic 3. It weighs 23.56 g on a digital scale prior to packing and while I suspected it to be coin silver it clearly tests as sterling grade. The design is carved with hatched shading (as opposed to cross-hatched) and depicts an Eagle with outspread wings and strong open beak, a flag shield is placed at the chest and in one foot/talon area he holds three (3) pointed arrows. Either side of the birds wings are scrolled designs leading up to the terminals. As it sets open in its rounded form, the best I can measure it including the 1/2" gap, is a total of 6 1/2". Say the latch was present - you decide to restore, the piece would fit a 6 1/4" to 6 5/16" arm unless a 'longer' hook is installed to accommodate a larger wrist...remember with the width of this piece it will wear smaller than the actual linear dimension. This silver was sourced second hand from a vintage wares market in Northern CA; I have no real history on this piece.
Please review images for your take on age, design and condition. Best guess is prior to 1900, maybe by a couple of decades. Well executed hatch work and of captivating design this bracelet has a handsome wear patina and presents well despite oxidation and a worn away latch. It is wearable or a good candidate for an honest restoration (it is old damage and certainly repairable if you choose...yet choose wisely who does the work; please forego filing away at the terminals...(and spoil the current condition because the next keeper may be a 'purist' and will want bracelet as close to it original condition and/or design as is practically possible. It's that kind of piece - one which deserves restoration not just a fix, if you know what I mean. Uncleaned and with heavy oxidation, a developed wear patina and is a piece suitable for the most discerning NW Silver collector either for wear and/or for display. If it is not an Edenshaw piece it is contemporary to his period and undoubtedly influenced by his works...please study it via the enlarged photos and appreciate the hatched work...(some objects of similar technique and elements are found in his work. (Vancouver Art Gallery, if you go to their web page and check-out past exhibitions / 2013 I think you'll find the similarities between some of those objects and the bracelet here at auction. If I have left questions unanswered or you desire more photos to clarify what I have up here for auction, just ask. Any interest in adding this to your Northwest Coast Art Collection? It is offered in a No Reserve auction format with low opening which allows most anyone with an appreciation of these older silver-works to participate in the bidding process and the chance to win a really nice piece. You know I don't say museum quality (a phrase which is complete over used, especially on this platform) but I have I have had sales to a few (museums) through eBay over the years...this piece is of that caliber. If it speaks to you, I wholeheartedly encourage you to place your bid(s) while you are here. Thanks!
