Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:450 |
If good we plant, not vice will fill the mindAnd weeds despoil the space for flowers design'dThe human heart ne'er knows a state of restBad lends to worse and better leads to bestWe either gain or lose, we sink or riseNor rest our struggling nature till she diesMary Ann Clarke November 11th1814
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark but paler in the corners. There are also a few small scattered dark stains and some very small areas of damage. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some bleeding to the stitch work of the writing and less so elsewhere. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. The frame has a good rich colour with some areas of old veneer loss and scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The last photo is of the back of the frame and shows a backing paper. which is quite badly damaged. As such, the buyer may wish to replace it with something more substantial.Measures 13 1/2" across x 13 3/4" (sight size) and 18 3/4" x 19 1/4" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
