Bb: Vintage Fluorite From Bluffton Quarry, Ohio - 3 - Color Fluorescence
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:44891258 |
Details: This little killer specimen is a prize. The fluorite cubes... look pale to medium brown but when observed closely with a light, they are actually phantoms with central zones of brown surrounded by a clear outer layer. The effect shows up much better under longwave UV; the cores show various shades of warm white to cream color, while the outer layers fluoresce blue (unusual in Ohio fluorites). The massive fluorite layer under the crystals glows bright butter-yellow to white under all UV wavelengths, . This connoisseur's classic Midwestern locality has been closed to collecting for nearly 20 years.
NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET:The higher quality the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Key factors include lamp wattage, UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. For extended viewing, use protective UV-absorbing goggles. The photos here are taken using UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave-254, midwave-312, longwave-351), Convoy/Nichia (longwave-365) and Philips BLB (longwave-368) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage. ° ° ° ° ° Please read before bidding! ° ° ° ° °* For combined shipping of Auction Items, send a message!
