Exceptionally rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1880’s Native American Sioux Indian, Hide Wrapped, Bead and Quill decorated Stone Head, War Club.
This simply outstanding, 19th century Apache War Club measures approx.18 1/2”and features an oval shaped, stone that is ¾ wrapped with stiff hide and solidly affixed by the stiff hide to the shaft which features the same sinew sewn, stiff hide wrap. The hide wrapped portion of the Stone head is encircled by qui...ll decorated hide strips and encircling the exposed, striking point of the Stone head are tin cones with horse hair tufts.
There are 2 bead decorated, brain tanned hide wraps on the shaft just below the Stone striker – the first features a wrap of greasy yellow seed beads and the second a wrap of red white-heart beads. There is a third brain tanned hide wrap on the butt end of the handle with a single circle or red white-heard beads. The stiff hide wrap on the shaft extends slightly at the butt end and there is a hole in the stiff hide, near the end, through which a rawhide thong is threaded.

This wonderful Sioux War Club came to us from the Minnesota collection of Stanley Slocum and was obtained by Slocum from the legendary, Colorado collection of Drew Bax.

This very rare and wonderful, ca1880’s Sioux Hide Wrapped, Beaded and Quill Decorated, Stone Head War Club is in very good condition. It is structurally solid, sound and intact with the hide wrap on the shaft and on the head intact and well preserved. There is some quill loss to the hide slats that encircle the Stone Head and three or four of the tin cone danglers are lacking. While there is some overall wear commensurate with age and use, overall the War Club is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully.
