Botryoidal Rhodochrosite, N’Chwaning Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, RSAThis highly unusual and very aesthetic crystal consists of several large intergrown botryoidal masses. The side reniform aspect (see photo) reveals countless, tightly packed, narrow elongate scalenohedrons. Viewed from the top surface, it is apparent that the scalenohedrons have been modified with flat, trigonal to polyhedral caps. The geometries of the caps are similarly or...iented within each botryoidal mass. Owing to this unusual arrangement, they individually and collectively reflect light to create a shimmering, sparkling aspect. The effect is quite mesmerizing and unusual. Moreover, flip the specimen over, and one is greeted with beautiful pearly, to almost opalescent crystal masses with deep internal fire. These are the concave undersides of the botryoidal crystals and the opalescence is quite striking in its pink intensity and deep glow. The N’Chwaning rhodochrosite deposits were quickly exhausted and are highly desirable to the discerning collector. Sourced directly fromnotable Tsumeb collector Clive Quiet almost forty years ago and has been in aprivate collection ever since. This piece is self-standing and displays very well. Size: 53x44x18mm.
