Andradite Garnet with Calcite and UnknownsBalls Hill Mine, Balls Hill Iron Mines, Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA13.8cm x 11.6cm x 7.8cmEx. George Elling Collection
Description/Interesting Notes: An extraordinary, 19th century example of andradite garnet from Fthe Balls Hill Mine in Franklin!!! This specimen consists of a huge, single crystal of andradite garnet in association with some smaller andrad...ite crytsals, some partially decomposed calcite, and some unidentified minerals as well!!! The andradite crystals exhibit sharp faces with marked luster and deep reddish brown color!!! There is some unidentified whitish mineral present that exhibits an intense blue fluorescence under SW UV (and a similar bluish fluorescence under LW UV with some peripheral areas showing a slightly yellowish tone)!!! Upon close study one can see some small areas of curious, crystalline grains of a colorless/translucent mineral intergrown with the unidentified white mineral (orange-red fluorescence under both SW and LW UV although more dramatic under LW)!!! Under SW UV the area of calcite exhibits characteristic reddish-orange fluorescence while the white unknown exhibits intense blue fluorescence, the unknown colorless mineral shows a slight orange red color as well (different hue than the calcite), and there are a few tiny scattered grains of greenish-yellow willemite!!! Intestingly, the unknown whitish mineral also exhibits noticeable blue phosphorescence after LW UV exposure and the unknown colorless mineral exhibits even more noticeable orange-red phosphorescence after LW UV exposure as well (as one would expect, the calcite does not fluoresce under LW UV)!!! This specimen is from the collection of George Elling altough it retains an affixed catalogue number to an old, 19th century collection of note (additional details provided to winner)!!! An incredible specimen for so many reason!!! The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
