Quartz after Malachite after Azurite Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia6cm x 4.5cm x 3.45cm
Description/Interesting Notes: An absolutely remarkable, and very unusual example of quartz var. chalcedony replacing malachite after azurite from Tsumeb!!! I obtained this specimen from Marshall Sussman some time ago, who referred to this specimen as the "Ghost Azurite" and remarked that he had never seen anything like it from Tsu...meb (The specimen was from a small Tsumeb collection that Marshall had recently acquired and the specimen retains an unattributed affixed catalogue number on the bottom)!!!This specimen consists of a group of elongated, intergrown malachite pseudomorphs after azurite crystals - the largest of which shows significant replacement by quartz var. chalcedony!!! There is also a small amount of an unidentified, microcrystalline yellowish-green mineral present as well as a few tiny bits of dioptase scattered about (generally included within the quartz)!!! There is much more quartz var. chalcedony present than the pics show - present as a thin, patchwork-like coating on some of the other pseudomorph surfaces!!! The main crystal exhibits marked translucence and luster with incredibly sharp faces - which is quite curious considering that this is not only a pseudomorph but a double pseudomorph (perhaps the chalcedony partially replaced the azurite prior to malachite alteration? although that seems improbable - either way - it is as fascinating as it is mineralogically perplexing)!!! The underlying malachite crystallization is quite impressive upon close study in person as well!!! This specimen would be incredible for any locality - however it is very unusual for Tsumeb indeed!!!The pics hardly do it justice!!! Must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!!!Good luck and be sure to check out my other exciting mineral auctions on ebay!!!
