Triassic Postosuchus Tooth From Texas
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4328995 |
Here is a rare and beautiful tooth. Postosuchus was described by S. Chatterjee in 1985. This fierce predator is considered by Chatterjee to be the basal Tyrannosaur! YES! This is T-Rex's great great great great grandpa (or grandma)! Early specimens of Postosuchus were mistaken for Coelophysis
This specimen comes from the Triassic Dockum Group, Lubbock Texas area. Postosuchus is a Rauisuchid and a member of the Pseudo...suchian clade that does include crocodiles, non-avian dinosaurs, and birds.
Postosuchus would be a formidable hunter reaching lengths of about 5 meters. Surprisingly, Short forelimbs, ankles, and pelvic structures suggest that Postosuchus could potentially be mostly bipedal. The skull is large and has a terrible row of razor sharp serrated teeth. The largest of the Postosuchus teeth could easily be mistaken for Daspletosaur (a Late Cretaceous tyrannosaurid from North America). This animal was unarguably the apex predator on land in the Triassic
This tooth is about 26 mm long with nice serrations. The color of the tooth is a mottled series of brown streaks, blue, yellow, orange, and tans. Really cool coloring.
This is an upper tooth near the premax. The close up pic shows some wear pattern where it rubbed against the jaw teeth!
