This is a nice mass extinction fossil orthoceras and Ammonite display stand specimen that was collected from Morocco. The plate has been professionally prepped by carving away and polishing the brown marble looking limestone to reveal these amazing specimens. These orthoceras were a cephalopod not a gastropod which is snail-like in features. These Cephalopods were marine type animal closely related to a modern-day cuttlefish or squid. They went extinct in the last mass extinc...tion about 250 million years ago. They are similar to an ammonite but instead of having a curled shell they stayed elongated and had a "cone like" shell. They would continuously add new segments to their shell to accommodate for their growing size that you can see in the close-up photos. These fossils date back to 390-250 mya and make a wonderful aesthetically pleasing display. The fossil specimen weighs in at 35.2 pounds and measures about 23 1/2 x 15 1/8 x 5 inches thick at base. This fossil makes a wonderful addition to any collection or a great window eye-catching display piece to get your customers attention or a one of a kind gift idea. Enjoy!
