Navajo weaver Betty Joeof Cove, Arizona wove this Second Phase Chief’s rug. The designreplicates a traditional Classic Period 2ndPhase chief’s blanket. These 3 colors are hand-dyed: the authenticindigo blue; and the aniline dyedcolors of black and red.The white is neither dyed or bleached - straight off the sheep. All weft yarn is 100%Navajo Churro sheep wool, single ply & mill-spun. The warp isstrong 2-ply, white wool. The edges are finishedwith 3 x 2-ply graycords, called “...weft selvages”. The cords across each end, used toset up the loom and warp for weaving, are 2 x 3-ply darkredcords, called “warp selvages”. This rug’s woven density is 8warps / inch and 24 wefts / inch. Two photos show Native Americans wearing Navajo chief's blankets, wearing blankets and serapes.Note regarding Navajo Churro Sheep wool / yarn: We see ebay sellers claiming that their rug for sale on ebay is woven with Navajo Churro wool. No such claim is legitimate, unless the seller knows where the specific yarns originate, meaning from which sheep. Churro yarn is not identifiable from touch or appearance. Knowledge of wool origin is impossible with old rugs and blankets. We buy our Navajo Churro sheep yarn from the only legitimate Churro yarn vendor in America that sells Churro yarn in quantity. They are located in El Prado, NM (outside Taos). Genuine Churro yarn costs roughly 2X what all other trading post Navajo weaving yarn costs ($26 / lb. compared with routine trading post yarn ~$10 - $13 / lb.). The Churro yarn that we give to all of our weaver to weave rugs for us is also sold at higher retail cost at a weaving supply shop in Taos, NM (Weaving Southwest). We are happy to provide our Churro yarn source to anyone who is interested. This is not confidential information. We suggest you Google "Navajo Churro" sheep / yarn to better understand why this is such a highly touted, expensive weaving yarn. The rug for sale here is one of our company's "Cortez Collection" of Navajo weavings. We will provide the buyer with a signed & dated detailed description, photos of the weaver, and a retail appraisal. Please contact us within 3 days of auction's close.
