Catawba Indian Pottery Chief William (Bill) Harris Two Handled Snake Vase
Item History & Price
This piece is from the Thomas J Blumer Collection and is among one of several pieces that he acquired from the Catawba.Tom had a close relationship with many of the potters on the Reservation; however, Earl Robbins, Nola Campbell, and Georgia Harris were very dear to Tom and Tom was dear to them. Tom also had a very good relationship with the grandson of Georgia Harris, that being Bill Harris of co...urse. In fact Bill Harris took the time out of his busy schedule as Chief and made the trip from Rock Hill to Columbia in order to attend Tom's funeral to pay his last respects to his good friend.
About half of Tom's pottery resides in the archive of the Native American Studies Center in Lancaster, SC. The other half, about 1000 pcs, are here with me at our home in Columbia. Tom passed away on April of 2018, and I am now selling off some of the collection, bit by bit to subsidize two books that I am writing. One on Tom;s life and life's work and the other on Tom's passion for art, both collecting it and creating it.
This piece is fairly early for Bill Harris made in 2009.It measures 6.75 inches high and 8 inches wide from handle to handle. It is a form of pot/vase that his grandmother Georgia Harris often made. The handles are very distinctly a Georgia Harris form.
Please study the photos carefully and ask questions if you have any.
