“In 1947, ZIPPO introduced a new model called the “LOOP” lighter, and later became the “Tach-A-Loop”. This model was made with the sportsman in mind, and featured a special hinge with a small “D” shaped loop for attaching a lanyard, to prevent the loss of the lighter. It is my opinion that this model, when first introduced, did not come with a lanyard. In a 1954 advertisement, it is stated, ‘The addition of a leather thong, loop or chain provides a safeguard against loss, its purpose was to attract customers who wanted a “lossproof” lighter. Originally made of nickel silver, it used a “D” shaped ring to allow the owner to attach a lanyard in order to prevent loss. The shape was changed, due to its ability to pinch the fingers."The attaching ring under-went numerous changes over the years… The “lossproof” model is still produced today. "This leads me to believe that the lanyard, and special boxes, were not introduced until 1955 or 56. The word “tach” to me would be an abbreviation for “attach”. The 1955 advertisement is of a (the) slightly modified and longer “D” ring. "This model was later named the “Lossproof”.On Jul-20-19 at 22:23:52 PDT, seller added the following information:I have been informed that this is a 1955 lighter ~ "The number of dots iscorrect for 1958, same as 1955. But the pat pend was dropped after 1956"
