Arts & Crafts Hammered Silver Catholic Reliquary 7 1/4" Chalice & Sterling Paten
Presenting a Humblingly Beautiful (believed to be) Art & Crafts Period Hand Hammered Silver Catholic Reliquary Chalice with Sterling Silver Paten for your consideration. The chalice having a glorious 2" hand hammered knop which includes (4) wrought crosses over a tapered cylindrical standard, this metalcrafter's masterpiece measures 7 3/8" tall X 5..." wide overall.
Possessing a rich and original patina, the chalice bears the cryptic maker's "anchor" hallmark with "AS" on either side that you see, which we could not identify. This type of hammered on hallmark is consistent with the hand wares created during the Mission Era. However, not knowing the maker, I can not ascribe an exact age to it.
The ecclesiastical ritual vessel bears no hallmarks we could find indicating it is sterling, so the chalice is being sold as silver plate.
The paten bears a hammered encircled cross on the top and is marked "sterling".
Total weight is 1 pound 2 ounces.
As the numerous good photos show, the condition of this stately silversmith crafted piece remains generally excellent. The primary flaw would be only the smallest amount of incidental scratching that you see. Hardly any bending at all is present. The vessel basin interior has a gold wash which remains well preserved also.
Otherwise, this beautiful & well preserved piece of silver craftsmanship remains well preserved in the extreme with no other real flaws. And really hardly any scratching at all.
