**See my many other vintage lighter listings Antique Sterling Silver Pre Flint Gear Driven Friction Fusee Pocket Lighter. A series of gears are set into motion when the lever is moved to the side. The friction with an emery stone would cause a spark and ignited the fusee (rope). The only marking is the word Sterling. There is a small screw which would allow you to access the mechanism. I started to open it, but then decided against it because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to put i...t back together. It likely dates to the 1890’s Condition: It appears to operate properly. The lid is slightly bent and is not flush with the body as seen in the last photo. There are no dings or dents. It is missing the fusee rope. Shipping : $7.85 within the US
