Original Description:
Navajo weaver Ofelia Joe of Cove, Arizona wove this 5'x4' Ute Style First Phase Chief’s rug. Thedesign replicates a Classic Period Navajo First Phase chief’sblanket. They were called “Utes” when no redwas used in them. The darkindigo stripes in this Uteare outlined with lightindigoblue, as are all wide dark brown stripes.
[I call it "organic" because the light and dark wide stripes are all natural color, no dyes. The blue is the organic plant dye "Indigo" used worldwide for ...millenia for the blue color, now considered your basic blue worldwide (its wavelength is the now the worldwide reference blue in all color science). Indigo was used until the simpler-to-use aniline chemical dyes were invented by Farben Fabrikan in Germany around 1862. These colors soon showed up in the USA as those bright, variegated dyed Germantown yarns used by Navajos for those striking, colorful Navajo Germantown blankets.]
All weft yarn is 100% Navajo Churrosheep wool, single ply & mill-spun. The warp is strong, mill-spun, 2-ply white wool. Our company hand-dyed the 2 shades ofnatural indigo blues. The darkbrown and white of the wide stripes arenatural colors. This Ute is woven with entirely natural products: either natural color, un-dyed yarn, or dyed with the natural dye indigo, which is a plant. (The gray-brown edge cords are also spun with a natural gray-brown.)
The edges are finished with 3 x3-ply natural gray-brown cords(“weft selvages”). Both ends have 2 x 3-ply light blue indigo cords (“warpselvages”). The technically high-end edge cord finish with 3 cordsmaximizes strength, durability and longevity. Three edge cords, unlike 2 edge cords, completely covers both edges’ outer yarnloops, protecting them from abrasion and breakage. The 3-ply endcords are ~50% stronger than the usual 2-ply cords. This rug’swoven density is 8 warps / inch and 30 wefts / inch.We show the Classic First Phase Chief's blanket discovered on the Antiques Road Show years ago, formerly owned by Capt. Kit Carson. It later sold for $1.2 million. The Antiques Road Show provided this photo to us at that time, while we discussed it with the program. Another photo shows Native American Brule Sioux wearing Navajo 1st Phase chief's blankets. On our website, we show the full size Navajo mohair / wool 1st Phase Chief's Blanket that was loaned to the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, MA for their Grand Opening Exhibition. They displayed it for 3 years. It is shown with photographs near the bottom of the "SALES" page.
Note regarding Navajo Churro Sheep wool / yarn: We see ebay sellers claiming that their rug for sale on ebay is woven with Navajo Churro wool. No such claim is legitimate, unless the seller knows where the specific yarns orginate, meaning from which sheep. Churro yarn is not identifiable from touch or appearance. Knowlege of wool orgin is impossible with old rugs and blankets. We buy our Navajo Churro sheep yarn from the only legitimate Churro yarn vendor in America that sells Churro yarn in quantity. They are located in El Prado, NM (outside Taos). Genuine Churro yarn costs roughly 2X what all other trading post Navajo weaving yarn costs ($26 / lb. compared with routine trading post yarn ~$10 - $13 / lb.). The Churro yarn that we give to all of our weaver to weave rugs for us is also sold at higher retail cost at a weaving supply shop in Taos, NM (Weaving Southwest). We are happy to provide our Churro yarn source to anyone who is interested. This is not confidential information. We suggest you Google "Navajo Churro" sheep / yarn to better understand why this is such a highly touted, expensive weaving yarn. The rug for sale here is one of our company's "Cortez Collection" of Navajo weavings. We will provide the buyer with a signed & dated detailed description, photos of the weaver, and a retail appraisal. Please contact us within 3 days of auction's close.  Ex-USA bidders are encouraged to ask for your shipping cost to foreign addresses. Pay w Paypal. We will ship USPS Priority Mail for $15 to the 48 states; or, upon request, we will ship via UPS / Federal Express Ground Insured but we need your address to determine the cost. Foreign buyers must request shipping cost prior to payment. Full refund if returned for any reason within 3 days of your receipt (no foreign refunds).
