Old Porcelain PlaqueBadly Chipped Corner Recent estate find. The porcelain plaque measures approximately 10” x 7.75”. Weighs 1 pound 4 ounces. The back top edge is either pencil signed, identified, or irrelevantly marked as G. Costa. I think this is probably Giovanni Costa (Italy, 1833-1893), but I could be wrong. If “G. Costa” has anything to do with the art, I do not know if it is an indication that the painting is by him or after him. I did some quick research and found that... G. Costa did at least one painting on porcelain. It is possible that I am misreading the writing. G. Costa may have absolutely nothing to do with this item.In addition to some other pencil marks, the back is also marked with an impressed H. There are no other marks on the back, and the front does not have any signatures. The writing and the H mark are shown in the tenth photo.I am offering the porcelain plaque unframed. You are getting the loose plaque only. One bottom corner is badly chipped. From the front, it is about 3/8” of the tip that is missing. From the back, the chip is larger and chunkier – the white portion of the chip that you see on back measures approximately 3/4” x 1/2". There’s some ugly brownish residue to the outside area of the chip on back that I guess was from an old attempt at a repair.I don’t want to understate the damage, because it is clearly a major chip. Very concerning. But with that said, when properly framed, it cannot be seen (or barely seen, depending on how deep it is).The sixth photo shows the front side of the chip, and the eighth and ninth photos show the back of the chip. The back of the plaque is badly soiled. Truly ugly darkening and discoloration. Blackened. I left it as found. If you look closely, you can recognize rubbing wear to the back edges, such as miniscule nicks and scratches, superficial dullness and that sort of wear. The front edges have some dullness and gold paint rubs, discolored marks here and there from rubbing inside the frame. The bottom left image of the last photo shows an example of a discolored gold mark. The edges of the plaque are very crude – they are not perfectly straight or flat. There’s waviness and whatnot that I think is pretty well represented in the seventh photo. Please help me out by closely reviewing the provided photos to best judge what you are bidding on.
