Fisher and Norris was the first successful anvil manufacturer to exist in this country, as well as the last of the major anvil manufacturers to stop producing anvils in America. The company was founded in 1843 and produced anvils for 136 years. They produced more anvils than any other American anvil maker. Fisher became famous for perfecting the process of welding cast steel on high grade cast iron. They also were the brand of anvil the U.S. government ordered for military purposes. According to Richard Postman's book, Anvils In America, Fisher claimed that "One blow on a "Fisher" anvil is worth two on any other anvil made". They went on to say that, "The Face Consists of a Single Piece of the Very Best Cast Steel Perfectly Welded of the Hardest Temper. The horn is made of Tough Untempered Steel and will neither Break nor Bend. All "Eagle" Anvils made with the Latest Fisher Patent Double Thick Steel on Both Edges of the Face." There anvils received the nickname "Old Reliable" because of their reliability.
