From my Collection: Here we have an extremely rare and very well preserved "No. 1 Size" Plane, the "X - No. 0" by the Union Manufacturing Co., New Britain, Connecticut. This plane was the smallest size offered of the series produced under the John W. Carleton and George E. Trask Patent No. 746, 285, Dec. 8, 1903. This diminutive patented plane has been one of the major objectives of a small group of collectors since the publication of Roger K. Smith "Patent...ed and Transitional Planes in America, Vol.1". A photograph on page 2 and page 261 of that book illustrated the four then-known "No. 1" size planes from Ruben Morrison's collection which then inspired others to search these out !! This example is one of the least common of the "No.1" series. This example is in complete and sound condition, having a very short cutting iron. The original mahogany handles were refinish by a previous owner. If you look closely at the tote you can see a faint dark line where a very tight hairline crack was repaired. Otherwise, the plane is in VERY, VERY good condition with most of its original black japan finish. The body is fully identified. The 1-3/16" wide cutting iron has a very faint maker's mark and patent date. This is a fully working plane with smooth functioning vertical post (excellent threads) / double brass nut, depth control lever. Plane has a 5-15/16" Long sole to the end of the tote lug. and is 1-9/16" Wide. PLEASE CLOSELY REVIEW THE PICTURES. I hate to part with this Rare little gem, but it is now time to pass it on to another appreciative fellow collector !! Good luck to all. ** Please remember to leaveFeedback. I will gladlyreciprocate. :-)Reg, Box A
