Antique Quart Brass Oil Measure Can Ca. 1800 U. S. Lighthouse Establishment RARE
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:409810 | Country/Region of Manufacture: United States |
Original/Reproduction: Original |
Brass oil cans were necessary in every lighthouse in the early days when whale oil and then kerosene were used to light the lamps. All lighthouse service items were marked or stamped to designate they were for the service and were property of the government. These cans are marked with U.S. Light-House Establishment which was the gove...rnment body that ran the lighthouses before the Coast Guard was established.
Several oil measures were needed to keep track of what was poured into each lamp or can and therefore many different sizes exist. This one measures 6 3/4 inches tall and I believe was used to measure a quart.
I am selling this as is. It is old it has some dings and dents but when I did researching before listing it is actually in pretty nice condition. Ones in this condition folks were asking for roughly 1500.00. I have not found another one of this size for sale on Ebay at the moment, so if you are interested please reach out! I can take more pictures if requested. Feel free to ask any questions and thank you for looking.
