Original Description:
Antique Stoneware Jug
Salt Glazed and Undecorated
Brown and Gray ColoringFor your Stoneware or American Pottery Collection Jug1DetailsDescription: A beautiful primitive salt glazed wheel thrown stone ware or stoneware jug with an applied handle. The jug has a round slightly concave base with straight rising sides ending at a high shoulder and a narrow neck. The neck has a shaped opening on top with a cork inserted in it. We are not certain that the cork is original to the piece ...but that is the way the piece came and we are selling it as found. The jug has black or dark brown highlights and the coloring on one side has a reddish brown tint while the other side is a bit more on the gray. The applied handle is colored in black or dark brown as is the shaped spout or opening on top. The bottom of the base shows the wire marks used to remove the piece from the wheel where it was thrown and shaped. The inside is also glazed, , but we are unable to ascertain the color of the inside. A great piece of primitive Americana of excellent form and look. storage jar. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely from late 1800s but may be earlier.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southern New Jersey.

Size: Measures ~4 1/4" diameter at the base and is ~7 5/8" high. The piece weighs about 2 pounds and 4 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very well made and very nice typical Americana piece of stoneware having nice color and shape deserving a prominent spot in any American pottery collection..

Condition: The jug is in excellent condition with no breaks, repairs, chips, or hairlines. The piece has scratches to the surface with some losses to the glaze as well as losses to the coloring on the handle and the spout. There is a few chips along the edge of the base. However, these are old and have darkened with age and truly blend in and are not very noticeable. The surface of the piece is also textured and has defects which have accumulated dirt and darkened in color. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive pottery pieces, the piece has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. All of these issues can be seen in the photos. Be that as it may, these are minor and do not distract from the piece's integrity, quality, and beauty. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of American Pottery. Please see photos for additional condition information.
