1811 land grant signed by Madison as president and Monroe as Secretary of State for a parcel of land near Steubenville, Ohio
Land grant signed "James Madison" as president and "Jas Monroe" as Secretar...y of State. 1 page, 14¼x8½ vellum. Washington, May 15, 1811. This is a land grant, bought by Peter Wise of Washington County, Pennsylvania, for a parcel of land near Steubenville, Ohio. Steubenville, Ohio, which was platted as a town in 1797 (it would not receive its city charter until 1851), was part of the Northwest Territory, which was laid out by Thomas Jefferson in 1784 and the subject of the Northwest Ordnance of 1787. The First Federal Land Office was established in 1801 to handle the distribution of property in the area, which could be sold or given away as land grants. David Hoge was the first Registrar of Lands and Titles for the Northwest Territory, which today comprises the states of Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan as well as Ohio. JAMES MADISON (1751-1836), who was known as "The Father of The Constitution", served as fourth U.S. President from 1809-1817. JAMES MONROE (1758-1831), who would succeed Madison as fifth U.S. President (1817-1825), was Madison's Secretary of State from 1811 to 1817 and concurrently served as Secretary of War from October 1814 to March 1815. Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Two large stains near top edge. Adhesive residue from seal in lower left corner. Cut in lower right corner. Grant has been folded vertically eight times. Otherwise in fine condition.
