It was struck at the Potosi Mint and dated 1808 during the last year of the reign of King Charles IV. More on that below…

The “Spanish Milled Dollar” had a worldwide circulation and was a true "Trade Coin". The famous Continental Currency of the fledgling United States was payable in Spanish Milled Dollars. They were the coin of preference in Asia and the United States later unsuccessfully tried to compete with it by issuing the quickly obsolete "Trade Dollar". This coin circulated in Asia, and has multiple "Chop Marks" on both sides. Merchants would mark the coin to assure themselves it was not counterfeit and was made of good silver.

Weight: 26.53 Gram, 39 Millimeter, .896 Silver.
"Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900) by Krause-Mishler. #73.

Obverse: CAROLUS • IIII • DEI • GRATIA • 1808 • Charles the fourth, by the grace of God. • Laureate “Roman” style bust of King Charles IIII right. Multiple Chop Marks.

In March of 1808, this year, the supporters of the heir apparent, Ferdinand VII, rose in revolt because Charles, after losing his fleet to the British at Trafalgar in 1805, had let Napoleon Bonaparte send French troops into Spain to attack the British in Portugal. Charles IV was forced to abdicate the throne to his son Ferdinand. He did so on March 19. But 1808 was not over yet…

In Bolivia, meanwhile, sometime in 1808 they stopped using the portrait of Charles IIII and switched over to the new portrait of Ferdinand VII. There exist coins of both rulers dated 1808. The different mintages were not recorded so we don't know how many of each were struck.

Ferdinand VII ascended the throne of Spain on March 19 but had to hop off it again on May 6 when Napoleon forced him to abdicate in turn. Napoleon placed his older brother, Joseph, on the throne, thinking his Spanish problem was solved and he could turn his attention to Russia, where 1812 was waiting. A little more…

Reverse: HISPAN • ET • IND • REX • King of Spain and the Indies. • Potosi mint mark in monogram. • P is for mint assayer Pedro Martin de Albizu who served from 1795 until 1824. J is for assayer Juan Palomo y Sierra, 1803-1812.

Arms: Crowned arms showing the lions of Leon and the castles of Castile, surmounted by the lilies of Bourbon France (added after the War of the Spanish Succession). The pomegranate at the bottom is for Granada. All between two pillars representing the pillars of Hercules (straits of Gibraltar) with a ribbon on them reading PLVS VLTRA (meaning “More Beyond”).

Joseph Bonaparte on the throne caused the American possessions of Spain, including Bolivia here, to revolt and throw off the Spanish yoke. After the British General Wellington had kicked the French out of Portugal and, it must be said, with Spanish partisan help, out of Spain, Ferdinand climbed back on the throne. But America was gone for good by then.

The Coin: A fully original, never cleaned example. And scarcer and more desirable thereby. It saw commerce and passed through many hands earning its present appearance. It has the chop marks that show it circulated in the far east. But they are not so numerous as to have seriously defaced the design or deformed the coin and most of the nice detail is still present. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
