Early/mid 19th century Welsh sampler by Gwen Bynner - 1838. Worked in an attractive limited colour palette of silk on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with Gwen's name and that of her school - Llanfyllin School. The date of 1838 is stitched at the centre of the bottom edge with a crown, basket, flower and heart to its left and three crowns and an & ...to its right. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general brown staining, and the colours of the thread are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Gwen first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of thinning to the gauze and a couple of areas of damage around the edges, the one to the top edge having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss to the letter F. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight the damage but once on a similar coloured backing cloth it would be less noticeable. Measures 14" across x 14 1/2"
