This striking and unique hand carved solid cherry headboard is another special period piece from the estate of a prominent French family that settled in Westchester County, NY. The headboard, which dates from the latter part of the 19th century, is distinctive for its beautifully detailed boldly carved period acanthus patterned posts; its well-crafted framed inlaid wood marquetry and caned accents; along with its artful period design and craftsmanship (see photos). Even the back of the... piece is beautifully finished (see photo). The headboard—which could also be adapted as a handsome fireplace mantel—measures about 66” wide by 6” deep by 33 1/8” high, including the 16” high attached wooden studs that were made to prop up the piece (see photos). The piece is estate fresh and in very good vintage condition; the upper right corner was damaged long ago, but remains intact (see photos) and the added studs and a bit of the molding at the left bottom, which are not visible behind a bed, are roughly finished (see photos).
