Farriers are responsible for shoein...g the horses of the regiment. The axe they carry is a symbol of office that originally performed the function of putting wounded horses our of their misery. The farrier of the Life Guards wears a dark blue tunic with red collar and cuffs, similar to that of the Royal horse Guards, but the Life Guards farriers are distinguishable from the RHG farriers by their black helmet plume, the RHG wears a red one.
