Rare and wonderful, ca1880’s Native American Sioux Indian Girl’s Cowrie Shell Decorated, Trade Cloth Dress. This outstanding, 19th century Sioux Dress measures approx. 23" long overall with a 34” chest. The decoration includes approx. 137 Cowrie Shells affixed in rows on both the front and back of the upper portion of the Dress.
This wonderful Sioux Dress is thread sewn with spot stitched cowrie shells at the yoke and arms as well as a single..., row just above the hemline. The Tunic / Dress is made from a heavy weight, navy blue wool trade cloth with red and cream colored trade cloth trim.
The Girl’s Tunic / Dress offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Cowrie Shell Decorated Sioux Dress crafted in the third quarter of the 19th century. The Dress comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. This rare and beautiful, ca1880’s Sioux Girl’s Cowrie Shell Decorated Dress is in very good condition. All of the Trade Cloth elements are intact and sound and generally clean and crisp. There is wear and some loss to the cream colored trim at the hemline and the ends of the short sleeves but the Cowrie Shell attachments are intact and complete with no loss or repairs. All elements of the Dress are original and there have been no repairs or restorations – the Dress is 100% original and 100% beautiful.
