Original Description:
I'm selling this beautiful WWII Kai Guntō Naval Officers sword mounted in 1937 pattern fittings, made in Seki.

This sword was made and signed by Kataoka
Kunihiro (片岡国廣)  in Seki and displays the Seki Stamp . Kunihiro is given as Kataoka Kunihide in Fuller & Gregory yellow books and in Jinsoo Kim san's list registered as Kataoka Chikashi (smith name Kunihide) a Seki kaji on 13th Nov 1941. Kikuhide is listed here as Murayama Kikuo (smith name Kikuhide). ...

Kataoka Kunihiro was regarded as a Rikugun Jumei Tosho Swordsmith meaning Army Certified Swordsmith. To become Rikugun Jumei Tosho, a swordsmith had to pass tests and examination of his blades. Once accepted as an Army Certified Swordsmith (Rikugun Jumei Tosho), the smith was given a regular allocation of tamehagane with which to make sword blades. Jumei Tosho smiths also made blades using non-traditional materials, mainly forged mill steel made in the traditional manner. A complete list of Rikugun Jumei Tosho swordsmiths was published in Showa 17 entitled "Rikugun Jumei Tosho Meibo".

Kai Guntō (Naval officers swords) are much rarer than shin gunto (army officers swords) due to the fact that most of them went down with the ship so there are relatively few left today. This particular sword is in fantastic condition for its age, displaying none but the tiniest speck of rust about 1mm large which I have done my best to photograph. The blade is straight and in pristine condition, with no nicks, chips, cracks, pitting or other signs of abuse.  It is not stainless as many of the later lower quality naval officers swords were. It is fairly well polished displaying it’s beautiful Hamon line, although it’s obvious that this sword was used in combat by its owner since the tip displays some small sharpening marks where it was sharpened and polished by its original owner, while still maintaining a perfectly shaped kissaki.

The fittings are the early 1937 pattern which can be seen from the lack of a locking mechanism that the later cheaper swords had towards the end of the war. All fittings have a shared serial number stamped into them, even the wood of the tsuka (handle), this was only present on the higher end of these sword. The fittings are also in phenomenal condition and seem to not have any wear, no dents/scratches on the tsuba, or rust on the gold plated seppa/fuchi ect. The silk wrapping is still very tight, and in good condition, minimally dirty, and not rotten or frayed in any location. All the parts fit together tightly with no rattle to be seen. The saya (sheath) is also in fantastic condition displaying no cracks or chips or loss of lacquer, complete with all it’s original gold plated fittings as well as the leather sheath that fits over it which is also in surprisingly good condition given its age.

This sword was purchased by me in Hawaii over 20 years ago where I bought it from a veteran who had brought it back after the war as a take home.

This sword would make a fantastic addition to either a Japanese sword collection or a military antiques collection.

It ships from my smoke free home. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have. Thanks for looking and good luck!
