小津安二郎の戦後第一作監督作品である。戦後間もない東京には、戦争で親を亡くした戦災孤児がたくさん居たが、その中の一人を拾ってきた男(笠智衆)は、そ の子を女(飯田蝶子)に預けてしまう。女はその子が疎ましくて仕方がないので、どこかに置き去りにしようとするが、なかなかうまくいかない。そのうち、そ の子供に情が湧いてきて、二人の間に、実の親子のような絆が生まれてくる。しかい…。段々と子供に対する気持ちが変化する経緯を小津の演出で、そして飯田 蝶子の演技力で、魅せる作品。懐かしい昔の東京の風景と共に、心に残る作品である。
