Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:350192 | Modified Item: No |
Country/Region of Manufacture: United States |
This medal and ribbons belonged to Civil War veteran Captain Edward Bailey of Champaign, Illinois. Edward Bailey served as a Lieutenant with the 67th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and later as Captain in the 135th Illinois Volunteers. Probably more famous as founder and president of the Champaign National Bank. The MOLLUS medal is in very good condition, but is slightly soiled due to... age.
This grouping consists of MOLLUS medal # 17371 belonging to Edward Bailey and two of his GAR ribbons. The ribbons were stored improperly and are in terrible shape, but they are part of a family estate and have been together since they were issued. They may have little intrinsic value, but as a historian, I think they should all remain together. The MOLLUS medal was made by Bailey, Banks & Biddle. My thanks to Adam Flint the current MOLLUS National Registrar-in-Chief for confirming that the Medal belonged to Captain Bailey. Son of David and Hannah (Finley) Bailey, married Josephine Susan Richards on March 17, 1868. They had three children: Fred (1871-1955); Ange, (1880-1942); and Belle (1874-1944). A Civil War veteran, he served as a Lieutenant with Co. K, 67th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and as a Captain with Company B, 135th Illinois Volunteers. He was educated at the Atkinson Academy, New Hampshire and Douglas University, Chicago. In 1879, Bailey, W.S. Maxwell and James C. Miller formed a private banking corporation known as Bailey, Maxwell and Miller Company. In 1882 the firm became the Champaign National Bank. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
I am also listing in a separate auction a President James Buchanan presidential land grant from this Bailey family (then in New Hampshire), which I believe comes from his grandfather.
