One pair of gold plated cavalry combat spurs with black straps. The Order of the Spur is a cavalry tradition within the U. S. Army. The tradition of "earning your spurs" goes back to the beginnings of the cavalry soldier. When green troopers first reported to their cavalry assignments they were assigned a horse with a shaved tail. Hence the new recruits were called "Shave-tails". These recruits were then taught the fundamentals of the cavalry soldier, incl...uding fighting from horseback. During this period of training the recruits were not allowed to wear spurs as improper use of spurs created even more problems. After the recruits proved their horsemanship skill to their superiors, they were allowed to wear spurs.
Today, the cavalry Order of the Spur recognizes individual qualifications for members of a cavalry unit. The right to wear spurs in a cavalry unit results from hard work and challenges. Upon successful completion of the requirements of the particular unit, the commander of the unit awards a set of spurs that may be worn with the uniform at designated events and functions.
There are two types of spurs that are awarded as determined by their color. Silver finish spurs are awarded to a soldier that successfully completed tests prescribed by the unit commander. Gold finish spurs are awarded to the soldier that has deployed with and has experienced combat with a cavalry unit.
