Very small late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by Pleasance Ward - 1787. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Using an attractive limited colour palette, Pleasance has stitched the linen with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with her name and the date of 1787. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with the odd small, faint stain here and there. The colours of the silks are good ...with a small piece of random stitching in the lower left corner. This is worked in a different thread to the rest of the piece and is likely to have been done by a different hand at a later date. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Pleasance first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 6 1/2" x 8" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
