This auction is for a stunning example of a highly pyritised* multi-ammonite fossil of the species Crucilobiceras densinodulum from the world-famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK. The fossil measures 35 mm (1.38 inches) across. There are multiple ammonites in the matrix which are all very well preserved. The shells are preserved on both sides of the piece. The detail in the fossils is great, they are well defined and the golden colour is beautiful. These f...ossils are becoming harder to find due to lack of erosion of the right layers in the cliffs.Thesemulti-ammonite assemblages (or 'death beds') occur when lots of shells cametogether on the seafloor before being fossilised together, often collectingaround an obstacle in the mud like a piece of wood or larger shell. They are abeautiful snapshot of life (and death) on the seafloor almost 200 million yearsago. Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.*Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearance of gold which is why it is commonly known as 'fool's gold'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot.
