I'm pleased to offer this very attractive specimen of Cuprite in Calcite with Malachite on gossan from Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona. The specimen measures 1.85 x 1.75 x .92 inches or 4.69 x 4.44 x 2.35cm and is from the Ron Blackstone (1947-2016) collection of Phoenix, Arizona. I bought his collection a few years ago and still have much to go through---I pulled this out of storage while looking for minerals to photograph just today.
Bisbee is one of the greatest min...ing camps in history and collections around the world are blessed with fabulous specimens of many different minerals. The mines produced aesthetic specimens for discriminating collectors and untold tons of massive ore specimens for the big wholesale earth science establishments of the day. Cuprite is one of the most sought after minerals from Bisbee and the mines produced world class specimens. Massive cuprite was commonly sought after by Ward's Natural Science Establishment of Rochester, NY to sell to schools and universities. This piece shows bright massive cuprite in white calcite with green malachite on earthy brown gossan---an iron oxide matrix. Classic Bisbee! I have such a reverence for Bisbee specimens that I convinced my wife to name one of our cats Bisbee!
