This is a lovely antique Victorian paper punched sampler, The Lord is my Shepherd.
It is in its original frame.
I believe it dates circa 1880s or 1890s.
The overall frame measures 12 3/4 inches high x 25 1/4 inches wide (32.4 cm x 64.1 cm). The sampler measures 8 1/2 inches high x 21 inches wide (21.6 cm x 53.3 cm).
I initially thought there were some missing stitches on the L and S. I believe though that this was done on purpose for effect. I don’t see any missing stitch...es. The paper background has a few scattered darker areas from what is probably foxing. The glare from the photos makes it look worse than it is.
The frame has some scattered nicking and wear to the finish. There is wear to the lemon gold gilt liner going around the sight edge. This probably happened when it was cleaned over the years and the rag wiped the gold off, leaving the white gesso below to show. It’s really no big deal and you only notice it if you are standing up very close.
The glass is bubbled and wavy.
Overall, it’s a beautiful sampler!
