MARIAN ROSARYHISTORY According topious tradition, the concept of the rosary was given to Saint Dominic in anapparition of the Virgin Mary in the year 1214 in the church of Prouille. ThisMarian apparition received the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. In the 15thcentury it was promoted by Alanus de Rupe (aka Alain de la Roche or Saint Alanof the Rock), a Dominican priest and theologian, who established the"fifteen rosary promises" and started many rosary confraternities.According toHerbert Thurston, it is certain that in the course of the twelfth century andbefore the birth of St. Dominic, the practice of reciting 50 or 150 Ave Mariashad become generally familiar. Despite the popularity of Blessed Alanus's storyabout the origins of the rosary, there has never been found any historicalevidence positively linking St. Dominic to the rosary. The story of St.Dominic's devotion to the rosary and supposed apparition of Our Lady of theRosary does not appear in any documents of the Church or Dominican Order priorto the writings of Blessed Alanus, some 250 years after Dominic. Leonard Foleynoted that although Mary's giving the rosary to St. Dominic is recognized as alegend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the Order ofPreachers. The practice ofmeditation during the praying of the Hail Marys is attributed to Dominic ofPrussia (1382?1460), a Carthusian monk, who called it "Life of JesusRosary?. The German monk from Trier added a sentence to each of the 50 HailMarys, using quotes from scriptures. In 1569, the papal bull ConsueveruntRomani Pontifices by the Dominican Pope Pius V officially established thedevotion to the rosary in the Catholic Church. From the 16th tothe early 20th century, the structure of the rosary remained essentiallyunchanged. There were 15 mysteries, one for each of the 15 decades. In the 20thcentury, the addition of the Fatima Prayer to the end of each decade becamemore common. There were no other changes until 2002 when John Paul IIinstituted five optional new Luminous Mysteries.
THREENAIL CRUCIFIXThough in the Middle Ages, thecrucifixion of Christ typically depicted four nails, beginning in thethirteenth century, some Western art began to represent Christ on the crosswith his feet placed one over the other and pierced with single nail. The poemChristus patiens attributed to St. Gregory Nazianzus and the writings of Nonnusand Socrates of Constantinople also speak of three nails. The three nails, as a symbol for thecrucifixion of Jesus Christ, are also used on the coats of arms of Drahovce, Slovakia, Saint Saviour, Jersey, St. Clement Parish, Ottawa and in the seal ofthe Society of Jesus.
