Hereis a rather rare antique Victorian gothic style bronze vesta or matchholder and go-to-bed in the form of a knight's tomb or sepulchre. Alit match can be placed in a recess on each side of the pillow inthe top to provide light for a short time to light candles etc.Thelid lifts off to provide a place to store the matches, or of course, the piece could be used as a trinket or stamp box etc. Itis very detailed, showing the recumbent knight with his shield whichhas a lion motif. Hi...s hands are together in prayer and he has adragon at his feet. It is exactly like the wonderful tomb chests seenin most medieval cathedrals or abbeys.Thelid fits well and the box has a bronze base.Thereis an inscription in gothic lettering around the side of the lidwhich reads "The Knights are Dust and Their Good Swords areRust, Their Souls are with the Saints We Trust". This is a quotefrom the Coleridge poem "The Knight's Tomb" and was alsoquoted in Walter Scott's Ivanhoe. So this may actually be an early, rather than later, Victorian piece.Theitem has a lovely patina and feel to it and measures 4.5 inches (11.6cm) long, 1.9 inches (4.7 cm) wide and about 3 inches (7.7 cm)high.Itis in very good condition overall.
Itis a super statement piece, ideal for anyone interested in gothicrevival pieces, or a collector of vestas or go-to-beds.

The result is that Royal Mail prices to the USA haveincreased by about 50% starting on July 1st – as examples, the costof a 500g parcel (probably the most common size we send) is going upfrom £9.81 to £14.88, while a 2kg package goes from £18.97 to£29.41.I will also post this with added compensation cover (hence the postage cost) to, hopefully, provide added peace of mind to both parties.
