This is the highly rated (9.3! on Atarimania, really!) and VERY hard-to-find, Vulcan: The Tunisian Campaign by R. T. Smith and Cases Computer Simulations Ltd. for Atari ST.
Description:Vulcan is a third entry in R. T. Smith's World War II trilogy, including Arnhem and Desert Rats. It simulates the Tunisian Campaign in 1942-43 from the arrival of the 'Torch' Task Force and their race for Tunis, to the final battle of 'Operation Vulcan'. There are 5 armies (3 Alli...ed & 2 Axis) and 5 scenarios, including the battles of Kasserine and Mareth. Each scenario has several pre-conditions to start from, which include Axis control Malta, Axis capture Bone, DAK (Deutsches Afrika Korps) destroyed, Desert armies late, and French neutrality. The gameplay is flown on scrolling map by turns. Player selects the units and gives them orders. Units move on the grid of rectangular cells. Landscape objects influence on the movement. For example, mountainous terrain allows hidden movement, or river blocks the way. Air attack phase is possible between turns. The game comes with detailed instruction booklet and includes historical notes on the campaign, maps and photographs. Two players representing Allied and Axis may be computer or human. 100/100 Sinclair User (May, 1987)An excellent wargame offering substantial challenge for the strategy gamer. The beauty of the system is that everything is done by simultaneous movement, of both sides - you and either the second player or the computer. Brilliant. Smith's best yet. It has to be a classic for any wargamer and the 128k version is even better. 94/100 Crash! (Apr, 1987)In presentation and game mechanics, Vulcan follows quite unashamedly in the tradition of Arnhem and Desert Rats. The format is identical and the system has been refined, rather than changed in any significant way. In his previous two releases, RT Smith developed a ‘look’ for a computer wargame which is extremely viable and, as he’s proving, pretty extendable. This is Spectrum wargaming at its very best; complex in operation, wide in scope, and easy to use. There’s hours of play in it and I would regard it as an essential purchase for every wargamer. 93/100 ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment) (Dec, 1987)With the computer or a friend playing one side (either Allied or Axis) the game is no pushover and will keep you absorbed for a long time. Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Aug, 1987)This is the best of the three wargame programs written by R.T. Smith, and probably the last for a while. Although the computer is - unlike that of Desert Rats - a worthy opponent, I find it works better as a two-player game, and should satisfy even the most critical of wargamers.* International Buyers – Please Note:Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges.
